There's another reason for having a repository, and I think it’s the most important thing in selling the idea…a metadata repository allows the development organization to save weeks (usually) of business analyst time gathering data source information for every project they do, and incidentally settles the inevitable arguments about the best source for the various data elements in the new solution. I term this the most important since it has a direct cost savings to the organization, and it speaks in the clear language of managers responsible for budgets.
